News: Griese Players and Youth Theatre July 2011

Griese Players celebrated their 12th anniversary on Monday July 25th (July 1999 to July 2011). We are eagerly awaiting our move back to the Meeting House. Having vacated the building on January 11th, and having sought temporary accommodation in the meantime, it now appears that unforseen builders delays (somewhat surprising in the current climate!) have further halted progress. These delays, whilst frustrating, have nevertheless failed to dampen our plans for an even better 2012.

GYT Summer Programme concluded with performances by the pre-Youth Group members (6th class/1st years) in “Around the World in Eighty Days” and the Griese Youth Theatre in “Trust Games”. Both performances took place in the Riverbank Arts Centre Newbridge on June 30th and July 1st. Eight members of GYT participated in a four day residential programme in Kilkenny College July 6th to 10th as part of NAYD’S Festival of youth drama. This event, which brought together 13 youth theatres from all over Ireland, was jam packed with workshops in clowning, improvisation dance and Shakespeare from facilitators Veronica Coburn, Ciaran Gray, Marcus Bale, Richie Ball and Annie Ryan.

Griese Youth Theatre Annual Festival (now in its 7th year) has been postphoned and will be held to coincide with the reopening of the refurbished Meeting House. We can’t wait! The Festival Programme is being compiled at the moment and will include workshops, music gigs, barbeque and events to suit all ages. Watch this space for confirmation of Festival dates.

Meanwhile a full Drama Programme is planned for September 2011 with drama and dance classes on offer to all members. An exciting development this year for Youth Theatre members is involvement in two Youth Projects, both projects will be based locally in Ballitore village and will involve ideas and input from young people aged 15+

These projects are being run by GYT but are open to young people who are not members of GYT. Any young person (over 15) interested in becoming involved please come to a meeting in O’Connor’s, Ballitore at 7.30pm on Wednesday August 10th. Please bring all your great ideas for what youth project you would like to see happen in your area. Additional information from any GYT member and from Griese Youth Theatre Facebook page.

Griese Youth Theatre are planning an International Youth Exchange in Summer 2012!!
